Chenikuthi woes

Chenikuthi is a very old area of Guwahati where many illustrious citizens stay. But over the years, this area has seen a great deterioration in infrastructure such as roads, drains, streetlights etc. Ever since the construction of the rotary near Guwahati Club point, the narrow KK Bhatta Road which runs through Chenikuthi has had to deal with an extremely heavy flow of traffic daily, with countless vehicles using this road as a short cut. Apart from causing a nuisance to residents, this constant flow of traffic has created many potholes and has also caused the storm drain grills to cave in. This is hazardous to both drivers and pedestrians. To add to this, the recent excavation work carried out by the Water Supply department has made parts of the road almost unusable. We expected that repair work would be carried out taking advantage of the lockdown, but nothing has been done. With the rainy season approaching, we are dreading the outcome as the drains that run along KK Bhatta Road have become shallow with silt deposits, and unless mechanical dredging is carried out, every heavy spell of rain will continue to discharge drain water onto the road. What really surprises us is that several VIPs with red lights on their car roofs, also pass regularly through this road, but notice nothing.

After reading in the newspapers that GMC is planning to clear storm drains and carry out repairs ahead of the rains, we hope that KK Bhatta Road and its drains will also be repaired and Chenikuthi will see better days.

Paramita Sarma,

Chenikuthi.
