Post-pandemic situation

The prolonged pandemic-induced lockdown in the State has been almost lifted. Now, both the government and the general masses need to be prepared for facing another far longer and more critical episode that awaits them with lots of uncertainties.

The debilitating economic concerns and an aggravated unemployment scenario aftermath the pandemic could easily be anticipated just when nationwide lockdown was declared.

Now, when the normalcy appears to be returning gradually, everything looks quite different. Various political parties and leaders across the State, and more importantly some new aspirants to political power are already gearing up for the upcoming Assembly election, 2021. All seem to bury themselves neck-deep in strategizing to bring into control the reins of power at the State brushing aside the issues which need to be prioritized.

Now, the worrying fact lies in the possibility of the indifferent attitude of the government towards the crippled economy and other core issues created by the pandemic in the State. Undoubtedly, the general populace and especially those belonging to lower economic strata don't need to worry about their sustenance as all the political leaders will stand by them now in every distress that may fall upon them.

So, now the onus will certainly lie with the conscious citizenry of the State to keep the government reminding its duty from time to time towards the overall prosperity of the State.

NEET/JEE-2020

The National Testing Agency has made a good decision to conduct the NEET/JEE as the entire academic year cannot be wasted. We need to take adequate precaution against COVID-19 and life must go on. The testing agency must ensure that the safety measures are not compromised at any cost. In addition to the vigilance team for fair conduct of exam, an additional team must be formed for strict compliance of COVID-19 safety SOP. Appearing exam in such a pandemic, the candidates will also learn to face challenges. It is reiterated that safety is the foremost.

Young scientists' conclave

It is a good news that Aprita Dalai, a research scholar in the Department of Ecology and Environment Sciences, Assam University has been selected for the 5th BRICS Young Scientists conclave 2020 scheduled to be held in Russia in September. She is among the 19 young researchers and one among five ecologists of the country making it to the conclave. I appeal to the young generation to follow the inspiring leap.

Jail reforms

The Indian jails are known as a place where prisoners are pushed to inhabit in harsh conditions. Now a jail has taken a decision for the betterment of prisoners. The Aligarh Jail opened its gymnasium for prisoners and provided opportunities to develop their health amidst coronavirus pandemic. This is a good move and shows that jail administration is too worried about the prisoners' health. The need of the hour is that all jail authorities should take initiative towards jail reforms, protection of the rights of prisoners, and provide the right opportunity to transform their lives. A good reform can change the mindset of prisoners and turn them again to become responsible citizens.

Water-logging

In the locality of our residence (Dr. M.N. Baruah path), Amolapatty all the residents have been experiencing water-logging. In fact a small road like ours should not have experienced such water logging problem but thanks to the civic body. The prevailing civic chaos exemplifies the absence of planning and implementation and obviously betrays lack of sincerity, commitment. Through their various acts of omission and commission, the authorities entrusted with the town's upkeep fail to rise to the occasion in doing the needful despite our several pleas and prayers. Now, they (The Municipality) have a good excuse to offer. Incidentally, a representation signed by the residents was submitted to the then chairperson on 31.05.2019, vide serial number being 1975 with Municipality seal. But! Nothing has turned up till now, despite our visit from time to time. The recurring phenomenon of water-logging has to be addressed with the urgency it deserves. Through this column of your esteemed daily, we appeal to our Deputy Commissioner to help the residents to get rid of the recurring problem.

Aarogya Setu App

It refers to Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on 22.08.2020 having launched the Open Application Program Interface (API) service for Aarogya Setu App enabling companies to integrate the App into their own systems and check for real-time COVID-19 infection status of their employees and pandemic in general.

It will be a very useful service preventing regular situations of offices being locked for several days because of corona-positive cases amongst their employees attending the offices. Now companies can know corona-positive employees in advance, and direct them not to come to office till isolation period is over. But restriction of minimum 50 employees for companies availing the service should be removed, and even private shopkeepers and offices with any number of employees should be enabled to use the service. Such removal of employee-limit will tend to decrease new corona-cases.
