Kudos! Assam Police

Finally the mastermind of the SI job scam - former DIG of Assam Police PK Dutta has been apprehended from his hideout. It is a big success for the police force who has managed to nab the most wanted man from his foreign location in Nepal. It is another story how he managed to sip through the borders and enter Nepal but with thorough interrogation the whole matter will be brought to light. The arrest of the big fish must have given some sort of relief to the Sarbananda Sonowal and his Home department that was under tremendous pressure from the Ripun Bora and company along with the ever alert media. Assam Police should be commanded by both Ruling and Opposition benches. It is certain that with thorough grilling of the ex DIG many beans will be spilled and names of some big officers of Assam Police and politicians might crop up. Hopefully Ripun Bora and company will show some restraint for the time being and watch the next scene unfolding in coming days.

Congress-AIUDF alliance

The Congress and Badruddin Ajmal's AIUDF have agreed to fight the 2021 General Election to the Assam Assembly jointly. Ajmal who visited the State on 4th October went to the GMCH to meet Tarun Gogoi, former Chief Minister and senior most leader of the Congress in the State who is undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in the GMCH.

Both the Congress and the AIUDF have agreed for an alliance to fight the election and that has been almost confirmed by Badruddin Ajmal on Sunday. In earlier elections Tarun Gogoi was against any alliance with AIUDF, but the extremely poor performance of his party in the 2016 General Election to the State made Gogoi rethink of forming an alliance with the AIUDF. The alliance of the two parties will stop division of minority votes. It is needless to say the minorities are always inclined to Congress or AIUDF. This alliance will definitely have some impact on the 2021 election as many an assembly segment in the State particularly in the lower and central Assam is minority dominated, and in such a situation the ruling parties may have to suffer.

Question over women's safety

Sita, Draupadi, Parvati, Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Savitri - a land of 1.2 billion people where women are treated as goddesses. We call India as our 'motherland'. Why is it that there is such blatant discrimination and violence against women in a country that worships so many goddesses? Eight years after the Delhi gangrape incident, a thousands of hollow promises to safeguard women, nothing much has changed. In Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped by four upper caste men on 14th September. Why is it happening, what was her mistake? It's really high time to look into matter and find a justifiable solution. Some people would blame it on women's outfits but why can't they see that it's not about the dress, but about mentality, even a baby girl child is not safe!! Shameful isn't it? Blaming each other is easy here but the main focus should be on the question that is women are really safe or not. Why a man can roam freely at night and not a woman? If she reaches home late, she is questioned. Problem starts at home and to change this, literacy is a must, wherein every household should consider son and daughter to be equally privileged.

Capital punishment for the perpetrators still remains a distant dream. Rape remains India's fourth most common crime against women, with an average of 91 rapes daily. The question is, when is this really going to stop?

Srimanta Sankardeva

Like yesteryears, this year too, the 572nd birth anniversary of Srimanta Sankardeva was observed in a befitting manner across the State. Needless to say that he is the greatest son of Assam and is considered a world figure in his own right. Undoubtedly, his literary works are glories of Assamese literature. The ideas he had propagated throughout his life did relieve harsh caste practices prevalent in the society in those days. But, that this great propounder of the Vaishnavite who, unlike the other religious preachers of the world, was not only a religious preacher but also a full-scale litterateur and a social reformer, has not been honoured with the status he deserves like Mahavir Jain, Lord Buddha, Gurunanak ,etc. do on national level, is really regrettable. The birth anniversaries of these great saints of India are observed across the country every year whereas the observance of the same of this "Mahapurush" of Assam who is imbued with uncommon merit is confined only to the State. Sadly enough, the government of Assam has turned a blind eye to this bitter truth. The leaders and politicians seem to be convinced of giving him due honour simply by admiring him and his contributions to the Assamese society in their speech only on occasions and at the time of elections. It is high time the government took initiatives to declare the birth anniversary of this Assamese polymath as a 'National Day' and hence give him what he deserves. Mere keeping on talking on various platforms about introducing Sankaradeva to the world will never make this idea materialize unless the government is really committed to sincerely do so.

Sign language school books

The Union government has initiated to develop sign language study materials for deaf children. A historic MoU was signed between the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center and NCERT to make educational materials accessible for Deaf children in their preferred format of communication via Indian Sign Language. Union Minister Dr. Thawarchand Gehlot said that this MoU is a step towards achieving the common goal of fulfilling the needs of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016, and New Education Policy, 2020. As part of this MoU, educational print materials such as NCERT textbooks, teachers' handbook, and other supplementary materials and resources of Class I-XII of all subjects of both Hindi and English medium will be converted into Indian Sign Language in digital format. This is a laudable move and ensures inclusive education for deaf children. The need of the hour is that we all must acknowledge the inclusive education model, provide a barrier-free environment, and equal opportunities to children with special needs in society for their optimum development.

Speaking at meetings

Meetings are being held in different parts of the State for various purposes at different times of the year. The chief guest, President and other people address such meetings. Many times it is seen that at such meetings guests speak not in line with the purpose for which the meeting is organized. It should not be like that. The meetings will be a success only if they give lectures on the main purpose of the meeting as well as the kind of audience present.

Diabetes as global epidemic

In the last 2-3 decades, diabetes has presented itself as one of the most challenging health problems in the world mostly in the developing countries. The number of deaths attributed annually to diabetes is around 3.2 million. It is one of the main precursors and acts as a catalyst in the development of cardiovascular disorders and is one of the leading cause of kidney failure.

Certain factors like Insulin resistance, lack of physical activity, persistent lethargy, and excess consumption of high calorie diet etc. are the factors that contribute to the development of the disease. Being overweight is the most potent cause behind insulin resistance that ultimately leads to type 2 diabetes also in young adults.

Treatment for diabetes requires keeping close watch over the blood sugar levels after a certain age. The management of diabetes depends on a large extent on what the patient eats and how much he/she exercise and enthusiastic in life as well as stress and other illness. For some people with type 2 diabetes, diet and regular exercise are enough to keep the disease under control whereas other people need medications which may include insulin and other oral drugs. Most importantly an optimistic view is needed to combat this disease.

Atal Tunnel

The long awaited Atal Tunnel under Rohtang Pass, inaugurated by PM Modi, is among the first of its kind in the world. The daunting feat by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has added to the country's strategic strength. The biggest difficulty was in dealing with the unpredictable water inlet in the partly dug out tunnel. This all weather road is an engineering marvel and a matter of pride for the nation.

Global Economic Freedom Index-2020

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to highlight the Global Economic Freedom Index-2020 which was released in mid-September, 2020. This year's report of the Global Economic Freedom Index is based on the data of the year 2018 and the top three positions of the list have been held by Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. In this year's ranking, India has fallen 26 spots to the 105th position among 162 economies of the world. In the previous edition of the report India was ranked 79th. Global Economic Freedom Index is published annually by Fraser Institute, a Canada based think tank related to public policy. The rankings which are based on some specific parameters signify the degree to which the institutions and policies of countries support economic freedom. Five broad parameters of the index are size of government, legal system and property rights, sound money, freedom to trade internationally and regulation.

According to the report, India's position in the index has slipped down due to the meagre performance in some parameters like freedom to trade internationally and regulation. Again, one important fact is, India is one of the economically worst affected nations due to COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the effect of the pandemic in India's performance in Global Economic Freedom Index will definitely be seen in the coming years.

I will be highly obliged if you publish this letter in your esteemed newspaper.
