Decline in filial bond
The scandalous news of an ageing mother of educated offspring, whose corpse was found almost skeletonized in a locked room of her own house at Jorhat, has made us realize to our dismay that there has been gradual decline in filial bond in today’s society. Quite regrettably, it seems, filial piety, that has historically been our traditional virtue, is no longer practiced in a so-called civilized society. Not to speak of the educated ones, even the most pious one is hardly found to follow what our sacred scriptures say -‘ Maatru Devo Bhavo, Pitru Devo Bhavo ‘ that is, parents are the incarnations of Gods. Is that kind of education of any use which fails to teach us the basic morality that we need to fulfill by attending on our old, ailing parents? Should we be considered humans if we care little to show our gratitude to those who have taken care of us throughout every important phase of life, at great personal sacrifice just to see us happy? We elders must set examples for posterity to see, learn and inculcate the good values in them, or else such undesirable happenings will surely keep recurring in the days ahead too.
