Illegal immigration

The news item, “Illegal immigration disrupting Delhi's economy, causing 'notable increase of Muslim population': JNU," published in your esteemed daily on February 4, has drawn our attention. The 114-page report of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) published ahead of the Delhi Assembly election analysed socio-economic and political consequences and revealed that the migration from Bangladesh and Myanmar, specifically the notable increase of the Muslim population, has not only altered Delhi-NCR's socio-economic and political fabric but also heightened the risk of a public health crisis as the migrant settlements contribute to widespread pollution and the spread of infectious diseases. Another shocking news article published in your esteemed daily, 'Bangladeshi girl nabbed with two youths in city hotel,' has raised the question of how a Bangladeshi teen dared to enter Assam without valid documents for a pornographic venture.

The JNU report and the recent nabbing of a Bangladeshi girl in Guwahati have made it clear that there are certain vulnerable areas in the city where there is a presence of undocumented Bangladeshi migrants. There is no doubt that illegal immigration is a serious problem in the country, as it has contributed to the proliferation of criminal networks for activities such as smuggling and trafficking. The State Police Department must take serious note of the issue and launch special operations across the state to identify and deport illegal immigrants before the situation takes a turn like Delhi's National Capital Territory. Unless there are collaborative efforts between the Indian government and neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar, there is no other way to check cross-border migration issues with inadequate border control.

Right now, preventing political patronage in a steady influx of undocumented illegal immigrants is the biggest challenge for every state government in the country.

Iqbal Saikia,

Guwahati.

Respect for national symbols

On our 76th Republic Day, after the celebrations were over, it was shameful to see the National Flag discarded on the streets and people ignoring the National Anthem. We must honour our flag, anthem, and song, recognising the sacrifices of freedom fighters who gave us our liberty.
