Land mafias in Chapor and Bilasipara!

A few weeks ago, a news portal aired news regarding the involvement of corrupt Mandals and other staff of the Circle Office of Chapor in the Dhubri district in illegal activities. The miscreants arranged a false death certificate of a person who is still working in the Defence sector and serving our country outside the State.

Now, it is a big question as to how such a false death certificate was issued by the competent authority? Persons involved in these heinous activities must be punished by the district authorities urgently.

Secondly, with the full support of Circle Office staff and others, the land mafia group has also done 'Naamjari' of a plot of land with the false death certificate and also managed fake voter ID, etc. The victim, a member of the Defence force, filed a complaint with the Circle Office. Now, we are waiting for justice from the administration urgently to punish the culprits. A similar incident was reported and a complaint lodged with the Circle Officer and SDO (Civil) of Bilasipara regarding the activities of land mafia groups supported by Government employees and the local judicial system. Employees of the Circle Office of Bilasipara were caught red-handed taking bribes (on camera) as reported by a news channel a few days ago. We, the senior citizens of Chapor and Bilasipara, are very much worried about the nexus of mafia groups. Can we safeguard our plots of land from these groups?

We are expecting strong action from the Dhubri district and Bilasipara sub-division administrations, including the local judiciary system. A few advocates, who are knowingly helping this miscreant group, should be identified and cautioned by competent authority. Through your esteemed daily, we senior citizens appeal to our honourable Chief Minister to look into this matter seriously and do the needful so that we can spend a tension-free life.

Gun culture in the US

Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old gunman, opened fire at the Texas Robb Elementary School, killing at least 19 children, two adults (including one teacher) as he went from classroom to classroom. It was the deadliest school shooting since the 2012 massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. When the US Constitution gives all its citizens the right to own a gun, and where guns are as easy to find in stores in America as grocery shopping in any country. Hence no one is surprised that although America has declared a decisive fight against terrorism and calls itself as big brother of humanity and may declare itself as the champion of democracy in the world, but it has never been able to do anything to stop the gun culture. As a result, in the last five decades, more than 1.4 million people have died due to gun violence in America. Interestingly, hours after the attack US President Joe Biden appeared ready for a fight, calling for new gun restrictions in an address to the nation. "As a nation we have to ask, when in God's name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God's name are we going to do what has to be done?" Biden asked. "Why are willing to live with this carnage?" Though his thinking is appreciable and timely, he forgets that in the last 230 years, America has not been able to eliminate gun culture because the former President himself was influenced by it. This gun culture was the biggest reason behind the assassination of four former US Presidents, beginning with Abraham Lincoln (1865) and ending with John F Kennedy (1963).

Additionally, two Presidents have been injured in attempted assassinations: former president Theodore Roosevelt (1912) who loved to be photographed with a gun, and Ronald Reagan (1981). America is the only country in the world where it is very easy for people to die by suicide because of gun culture. As per media reports, the US has 120 guns for every 100 people. This is not the sign of a democratic country and hence to avoid it, this is the right time to see whether President Biden will deliver a more policy-oriented speech in the coming days, calling on Congress to take specific action to control the powerful gun lobby.

Education must not be degraded

Just yesterday the Punjab Chief Minister had sent a Cabinet Minister to jail because of various complaints against him. One must have full determination and strong willpower to do so and such an act is not expected from the West Bengal Government. The Calcutta High Court recently ordered Ankita Adhikary, the daughter of West Bengal's Minister of State for Education Paresh Adhikary, to return the salary which she received as a school teacher since 2018 and also barred her from entering the school premises where she was working.

This case was brought to the notice of the court by the petitioner by bravely facing the situation, but how many persons can face such a terrible situation? That is the reason that Indian students are going abroad for higher education. It is a burden on the Indian exchequer and the foreign countries are earning profit from this business. Recently, the country had faced a crucial situation due the Ukraine war where 20,000 Indian students were studying medical courses.

If such type of malpractices continues, then what will be use of introduction of the New Education Policy? No Indian university is among the top one hundred universities of the world It is expected from the authorities concerned to improve the world ranking of Indian universities.

Finally, the West Bengal Government should ensure that such type of activities do not recur in the State as they tarnish the image of the State.
