Letters to The Editor: Neeraj Chopra

Neeraj Chopra is an athlete who, except for one occasion, has won gold in all his national and international outings. This speaks volumes of his talent. With due respect to all the athletes, Neeraj was my personal favourite to win a medal in the Tokyo Olympics. I knew that India won't come home empty-handed. His first throw of 87.03 metres was actually enough to win the gold medal. He qualified for the finals with his first throw and then went on to win the gold medal with his first throw in the finals. With this gold medal, Neeraj has given birth to a new India which can boast of a medal in Athletics. Neeraj hurled a spear to the sky to burst it open on the 100 year-drought for a medal in athletics. I want to thank Neeraj for giving us a reason to smile in these trying times. India is so proud of you. You are a champion and you have proved it. India has no doubts that more such medals will sparkle in your cabinet in days to come.

Medals counting

India's medal tally is soaring at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. This is indeed heartening. Winning a medal at the Olympics demands extraordinary talent and attitude. Indian sportspersons are likely to bring half a dozen medals, if not more, this time. This is phenomenal. In the future, India can occupy a prominent space in the victory map of the Olympics, provided the Centre and States allocate considerable resources for the selection and training of sportspersons on a perpetual basis.

Apropos to the inspiring front-page news report in the box, "Neeraj first Indian to win gold in Olympic athletics" (The Sentinel, 8th August 2021, Sunday), I would like to applaud the 23-year-old Neeraj Chopra, the proud recipient of the gold medal in athletics (javelin competition) in Tokyo 2020 by throwing the javelin till 87.58 metres.

It is a matter of fact how it makes one feel after winning the first-ever Gold Medal in any event as an Indian at Olympic Games. Indeed, we, Indians are elated with his wonderful performance – three gold medals, one at the Commonwealth Games; next, at the Asian Games and the latest one at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday (7th August 2021)!

By seeing Neeraj Chopra's rise as an athlete, the youths of India must have understood that there is nothing impossible in this world, only if someone possesses an indomitable spirit and perseverance to reach his/her goal.

There is no shortcut to success in life. Through regular practice and improvement upon one's performance, any sports enthusiast can do wonderful things on the playground. He/she must have sportsman spirit to try and try again for betterment. One should never be disheartened with initial failures or obstacles, if any, during his/her sports career.

Hard work pays in the long run. The mantra is: "TRY, TRY and TRY again!!!"
