The great loss
Every one of us has lost at least someone of our own in our lives. That person may be our mother, father, brother, husband, or maybe, someone's child. The experience of losing someone of our own is very painful. Sometimes, some person's death causes a sadful turn in his family. But this loss is only a personal loss or the loss of a family.
From time to time, some personalities take birth in society, at the loss of whom the society has to pay a lot. Such a personality was the Burha Xatriya of Barpeta Xatra, Basistha Deva Sarma. He was also an institution in himself. All the time throughout his working life, he tried to spread the culture and ideologies of the Vaishnavite religion. He was a true follower of Mahapurush Sankardeva and Mahapurush Madhavdeva. As we have known him for more than thirty years, the excessively wide and amazing popularity that is seen at his 'Mahaprayan', he had earned through his lifelong hard work, his dedication and loyalty towards the Vaishnavite religion, his simplicity, and his artistic talent.
He helped the common people to understand the ideologies of Sankardeva and Madhavdeva. He popularized the 'Veernaam' among the new generation. The range of his voice touched spirituality.
As we say of Basistha Deva Sarma, we cannot regard him as a simple human being. There was a divine glow in his appearance. Whenever he used to pass through the road, it seemed that the divine glow of his appearance enlightened the whole area.
He was not only a religious priest. He was a priest of humanity also. He led a straightforward personal life.
Such a personality rarely takes birth in a society. But, such a divine person took birth in Assam, and his workplace always remained Barpeta. He was a gem of Barpeta and Barpeta Xatra. He kept shining the Barpeta Xatra all the time. The loss of this divine personality is a great loss to the society of Barpeta.
