Toxic smoke crisis in Deepor Beel

Deepor Beel, a Ramsar site, is one of the most cherished natural treasures that has been losing its ecological balance for a few years. The visit of the migratory birds has been decreasing throughout the year. But currently it is not only damaging the wetland and its aquatic life but also becoming harmful for the local people who live around Deepor Beel. For a few months, the situation was becoming way worse because of the burning of waste around the area. Many of the residents around the area have fallen ill because of the toxic smoke. In April 2024, residents had complained to the authorities about the burning of waste, but no action was taken. Within these two days, the situation became worse, and the local people are having problems breathing. Many of the residents can't even open their house windows because of the pests, insects, and a foul smell. Because of the smoke burning, many of the people have started to experience respiratory problems, skin irritation, and even long-term illness like cancer. If the government takes the necessary steps to solve this crucial issue, then it will be very helpful for preserving such an important part of Assam's treasure.
