Respect Kati Bihu

Having lived a major part of my life in Assam, I respect and participate in the festivals native to the State. Kati Bihu is a sombre occasion and people pray for a good harvest. The Government of Assam declared a holiday on Kati Bihu for its offices. For last few years, the State government has also declared holiday for Kati Bihu under N.I. Act, 1881, and because of this, financial institutions, banks, insurance companies etc., remain closed to enable people to participate in the festivities. However, it was painful and unfortunate that on 18th October last, the day on which the Government of Assam declared a holiday for Kati Bihu, many schools remained open as usual, without caring to respect the native festival. We urge the State government, as also organizations like Axam Xahitya Xabha, AASU etc., to keep vigil and ensure that all concerned respect local culture and sentiments.
