The Cultivators: Endeavour to establish Kalaguru on the international platform

Art, culture and society are all basic human functions which are integral to human society. Humanity and art are interdependent and mutually supportive of one another. One of the most significant artistic and cultural forms, music both reflects and shapes the social environment in which it is produced. Young and vivacious folklorist and activist Arupjyoti Baruah wants to capitalize on the power of music. He performs as the frontman for the original folk-fusion band The Cultivators. The Cultivators is a Pan Indian musical band which raises the voice of the masses through their compositions, with which they incorporate the sorrow, misery, and rage of the general public. Their songs display a combination of western and folk fusion. They have written a lot of songs, and one of their well-known tunes that has moved the audience is-

‘Lei lei sei sei nokoribi muk Officer hobo paro toi Khatir nokoru tohot dore hei pujipoti amolak moi Dami gari, ottalikar bahaduri amak dekhuai labh nai Xushon nokoribi bhai Toi khati khua buror bahurbol dekha nai…’

The Cultivators is founded on the beliefs of legendary figures like Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, and Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika. The band showcases the rich diversity of folk traditions from the Northeast region. They incorporate various cultural attires into their performances, highlighting their deep connection to their heritage. Unlike other musical groups, the Cultivators have lasted for the past 10 years since their formation. Their primary objective is to promote and preserve the north-eastern traditions and cultures, not only within Assam but globally as well. With this regard, they have been performing at various places outside India. And this year they have chosen to perform a programme with the motto ‘From workplace to birthplace’ (karma bhumir pora janmabhumiloi) in Dhaka to give a tribute to Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha on his death anniversary at his birthplace.

They have been performing on June 20 every year since 2016 on the occasion of ‘Rabha Divas’ to introduce Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha’s beliefs and actions to a global audience. This year on June 20 and June 21, respectively, the Cultivators presented performances under the leadership of Arup Jyoti Baruah (singer) at the Teacher Student Centre (TSC) and Senate Hall of the University of Dhaka to honour Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad. It was organized under the leadership of Dr M.A.Khalid, President of Dhaka University Psychology Alumni Association.

On June 20, the program commenced at the Teachers Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University. The event began with a ceremonial homage to Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, as attendees paid their respects to his portrait. Violina Bordoloi delivered a narrative speech focusing on the life and contributions of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and people associated with him throughout his journey, starting from Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev to Dr Bhupen Hazarika. The Cultivators expressed their appreciation and honoured the organizers, who were acknowledged for their efforts. The band performed several Rabha Sangeet including Bol Bol Krishak Saktidol, Nahor Phule, and Logon Ukoli Gol. They also presented renditions of Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s renowned compositions such as Manuhe Manuhor Babe and Ganga Amar Maa. Additionally, an instrumental concert featuring Bishnu Prasad Rabha’s melodies was held at Dhaka. After this they have also performed a jamming session on the streets of Dhaka.

On June 21, as part of Rabha Divas, a cultural night was organized at the University Senate Hall. The event showcased a variety of performances ranging from Sankardev’s creations to Jyoti Sangeet, Rabha Sangeet, Bhupendra Sangeet, Bihu, and other folk items like Baul and Bhatiali. One of the highlights of the evening was a stunning Bihu dance performance by Violina Bordoloi, accompanied by the song Nahor Phule. In addition to the featured artists, the University’s own talented performers also took the stage to showcase their programs. The Psychology Alumni Association played a significant role by felicitating the artists of the Cultivators and reciprocating their contributions.

The members of the band, Cultivators, who mesmerized the audience with their musical prowess, included Arupjyoti Baruah, Bikash Kalita (Guitar and Dotora), Ishanu (Guitar), Jitul Das (Drums, Percussion, Khol, and Dhol), Violina Bordoloi, Saurabh Das (Flute) and Nilutpal Hazarika. Their collective talent added to the vibrant atmosphere of the cultural night, leaving a lasting impression on all those in attendance.

For taking this great initiative to introduce the ideologies and activities of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha to a global platform, we would like to appreciate them for their efforts on this great endeavour.
