Bollywood filmmaker Hansal Mehta wrote a lengthy message on X praising Aamir Khan’s choice of uploading his most recent movie, “Sitaare Zameen Par”, on YouTube. The pay-per-view approach, he said, was a wise and forward-thinking step. But when he used ChatGPT, an AI chatbot created by OpenAI, to write his article, he was trolled by a social media user. Mehta’s usage of AI for his message caused a user to express dismay shortly after he posted it. Aamir Khan’s “Sitaare Zameen Par” will be available to watch on YouTube from today, August 1.
The user commented, “Hansal, you are a writer and filmmaker. It’s disheartening that filmmakers like you are using Chatgpt to express even their smallest perspectives... Whatever your opinion, it should be original, without relying on AI.”
Mehta wasn’t in the mood to dismiss the remark. In response, he acknowledged using AI to correct his post’s grammar. “It is my opinion. In my words. Grammar corrected by AI. React to the thought please,” the filmmaker clarified.
Mehta was backed by a number of X users who agreed that using AI to improve content is acceptable. “So what if he is a writer? What’s wrong in using tools to economize on time and effort? This is a platform for expressing your views, not a screenwriting competition,” a user wrote.
Mehta commended Aamir for his choice of releasing his movie on his YouTube channel, Aamir Khan Talkies, on Thursday.
“Aamir Khan releasing Sitaare Zameen Par on YouTube as a pay-per-view title after its theatrical run is not a threat to anyone. It’s a smart, forward-looking move that deserves applause, not knee-jerk criticism,” he wrote.
The filmmaker added, “Our ecosystem is skewed toward instant gratification and a handful of giant spectacles. Theatrical windows are treated like rigid commandments, while OTT has become the only post-theatrical refuge. So many thoughtful films vanish or languish. That’s neither sustainable nor fair to the diversity of work we produce. If this model works, it will embolden more producers to back films that don’t follow the herd mentality currently dominating the sector.” (Agencies)
