As an Assamese staying in America, I have always tried to stay connected with my cultural roots. Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a special screening of the Assamese movie, Dr.Bezbaruah 2 in New Jersey, USA. The experience was surreal, and it was heartwarming to see so many members of the Assamese community from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware come together to enjoy the movie. Having heard extensively about the movie’s widespread commercial success in India, we were eager to watch it in this foreign land. The screening was held at Regal Cinemas in New Jersey, and despite the rainy weather, our spirits were not dampened. It was probably the first time that an Assamese movie was screened in a leading national movie theatre, which was an achievement in itself.

The event was organized by the North East Indian American Cultural Organization (NEIACO), and it was clear that they had put a lot of effort into making it a success. The hall was packed to the brim, with 91 people in attendance, and everyone was buzzing with excitement. The atmosphere was electric as we eagerly awaited the start of the film. As the theatre lights dimmed and the opening credits began to roll, I was immediately struck by the stunning visuals and captivating cinematography of the new-age film. From the elaborate costumes to the mesmerizing soundtrack, it was truly a feast for the senses.

What’s more, the movie had the added appeal of featuring remixes of classic songs that had become a beloved part of Assamese film-pop culture. Although not a sequel to the original hit film, the present movie was directed with the tastes of a younger and evolving Assamese generation in mind. Additionally, the film boasted the presence of the late Nipon Goswami, a yesteryear star whose legacy added even more depth and significance to the viewing experience. The movie itself was entertaining and did not disappoint. What was even more amazing was the fact that everyone had dressed up in traditional Assamese attire. We all donned our Mekhela Sador, representing our culture and heritage. It was a beautiful sight to see and added to the overall experience of the event. The whole community had come together to celebrate an Axomia movie, making it a perfect post-Bihu celebration.

The screening was not only a great cultural experience, but it was also a fantastic networking event. It was an opportunity to meet and connect with other members of the Assamese community who are equally passionate about staying connected to their cultural roots. To top it off, my in-laws were visiting the USA for the first time, and we were more than happy to take them with us. It was a fantastic way to introduce them to the culture and traditions of Assam in America and how we celebrate them here.

As the credits rolled and the lights came back up, I felt a sense of euphoria that lasted for hours afterward. It was a truly magical experience and one that I will cherish for a long time to come.
