MUMBAI: A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi on Friday for not wearing a mask after the actor shared a video of him going out on a ride on a motorbike with his wife Priyanka Alva Oberoi on Valentine's Day.

According to reports, the FIR was registered against the 'Yuva' actor at Juhu Police Station. The video which was shared by the actor on his social media account showed him riding a motorbike without wearing either helmet or face mask. The case was registered after the police came to know of the incident from the video.

The FIR was registered under IPC sections 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) along with provisions of the Maharashtra COVID -19 Precautionary Measures 2020 and the Motor Vehicles Act, the official said.

According to reports, a fine amounting to 500 rupees was imposed on the 'Saathiya' actor for not wearing a helmet.

Punishment under both IPC sections 188 and 269 entails upto six months in jail or fine or both.

Maharashtra is seeing a surge in coronavirus cases. Mumbai city administration on Thursday warned that people flouting the compulsory mask rule will be prosecuted.

Meanwhile, Oberoi took to Twitter to thank and praise Mumbai Police for issuing the challan. He wrote, "Pyaar humein kis mod pe le aaya! Nikle they nayi bike par hum aur hamari jaan, bina helmet ke kat gaya chalaan! Riding without a helmet? Mumbai police will do a checkmate! Thank u @mumbaipolice for making me realise that safety is always most important. Be safe, wear a helmet & a mask."

The Maharashtra government has imposed lockdown in several districts to control the rise in COVID-19 cases this week. On Friday, the state reported 6,112 new cases in 24 hours, which is the highest single-day spike in the last three months.
