Hollywood actor Richard Gere calls Trump a ‘bully’ and ‘thug’ at Goya Awards

Hollywood actor Richard Gere was recently be stowed with the prestigious International Goya Award at Spain's top film honours, the Goya Awards 2025.

t the awards ceremony, Richard Gere put up a handsome front in a black suit. During his acceptance speech, he spoke about the US President Donald Trump and what America has become in the past few years with the rise of authoritarianis. He called Trump a "bully" and a "thug" during the awards ceremony and said that the US is in a "very dark place".

While accepting his award, he said, "We're in a very dark place in America, where we have a bully, a thug, who's the president of the United States. But it's not just in the US, it's everywhere. Authoritarianism takes us all over."

Richard Gere was presented the award by Spanish actor Antonio Banderas. Antonio presented Gere with the honorary award for "his extraordinary contribution to the art of filmmaking" and his social commitment to various causes, including the plight of refugees and the homeless.

During his speech, Richard Gere warned of the "dark marriage" of power and money "like we've never seen before".

"The fact that these irresponsible and perhaps dangerously corrosive billionaires are running everything in America right now is a danger for everyone on this planet," he said.

Last year, Richard Gere and his Spanish wife, the publicist Alejandra Silva, 41, moved to Madrid with their two sons. (Agencies)
