The Assamese feature film Taarikh has been officially selected for its world premiere at the Indian Panorama section of the prestigious 22nd Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF), scheduled to take place from December 12 to December 19. This recognition marks a significant milestone for Assamese cinema, as Taarikh is the sole representative from Assam and the Northeast at this year’s festival.
Produced by Arundhati Sarmah Baruah and Dr Muktismaan Hazarika, Taarikh is the second directorial venture of Himjyoti Talukdar, who previously earned acclaim for his debut feature film Calendar in 2018.
The film features a stellar cast, including veteran actor Arun Nath, alongside Boloram Das, Swagata Bharali, Kula Kuldip and others. The music is composed by National Award-winning artist Tarali Sarma, with sound design by fellow National Award winner Debajit Gayan, and cinematography handled by Aniruddha Barua.
Shot primarily in Guwahati, Taarikh narrates a poignant yet hopeful story of Professor Durlov Dutta, a retired academic portrayed by Arun Nath. Haunted by a grim incident from his past, Dutta’s life takes a turn when an unexpected opportunity arises, offering him a chance to break free from his emotional turmoil.
The Chennai International Film Festival, an event organized with the support of the Government of Tamil Nadu, the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, and the Film Federation of India, is a prominent platform celebrating cinematic excellence. Being selected for the Indian Panorama section of CIFF highlights Taarikh’s artistic merit and its contribution to Assamese cinema on a national and international stage, stated a press release.
