An earthquake of 7.7 magnitude shook Myanmar on Friday, with tremors felt in Guwahati and other parts of India, including in Delhi-NCR.

GUWAHATI: An earthquake of 7.7 magnitude shook Myanmar on Friday, with tremors felt in Guwahati and other Northeastern parts of India. The tremors were also felt in Delhi-NCR. Bangladesh, India, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand and China were also affected by the tremor.

The earthquake occurred at around 11:50 am, according to the United States Geological Survey, and the tremor was reported at 11:53 am. The epicenter was located 12 km from Sagaing, Myanmar (Burma).

Reports of damage have emerged from Bangkok, Thailand, where strong tremors were felt. Videos shared on social media shows an under-construction building collapsing like a house of cards. People can be seen running in distress.

Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has issued a nationwide alert and has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok. He has warned the public to remain cautious for potential aftershocks, as they are common in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake. The government has taken immediate steps to safeguard people.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya experienced a mild tremor as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake rattled parts of the state, sending ripples of concern among residents. While no significant damage was reported, the quake was widely felt across multiple areas. The epicenter was East Garo Hills.
