
TIBET: At least 95 people lost their lives, and over 130 were injured after six earthquakes, including a powerful 7.1-magnitude quake, struck Tibet within an hour on Tuesday. The tremors were felt across several regions, shaking buildings in India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
According to reports, several buildings near the epicenter collapsed. "Dingri County and the surrounding areas experienced intense tremors, leading to the collapse of many buildings near the epicenter," the report stated.
Shigatse, with a population of 800,000, serves as the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, a prominent figure in Tibetan Buddhism.
Strong tremors were experienced in Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India, including Patna, the capital of Bihar, and various northern regions of the state. The earthquake was also felt in West Bengal and the northeastern states, including Assam.
In Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, residents reportedly rushed out of their homes after feeling strong tremors. According to the country's disaster management authority, the tremors were experienced in seven hill districts bordering Tibet.
The National Centre for Seismology reported that a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Xizang, near the Nepal-Tibet border, at 6:35 a.m. This level of intensity is classified as strong and has the potential to cause significant damage. Meanwhile, Chinese officials recorded the quake's magnitude as 6.8 in Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city.
Two aftershocks, measuring 4.7 and 4.9 in magnitude, were reported in the same Xizang region.
