Exiled President Ashraf Ghani to Return to Afghanistan

KABUL: Exiled Afghanistan President who fled and took political asylum in UAE on the eve of Taliban entered Kabul on Sunday, claimed that he would return to his motherland.

The exiled president also said that he supported the discussion between the Taliban and the former senior Afghan government officials.

After taking over the power, the Taliban, reportedly, held several parleys with the former Afghan government officials. "I support the meetings between the Taliban and the government officials. Also, I continue to discuss with them so that I could return to Afghanistan again,'' Ghani added.

The Taliban reclaimed Afghanistan on Sunday after a gap of twenty years sending shockwaves across the world.

Exiled Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Wednesday defended his decision to leave Kabul as the Taliban advanced and eventually toppled his government.

He claimed that he was "forced to leave Afghanistan with one set of traditional clothes, a vest and the sandals I was wearing." Ghani left Afghanistan on Sunday just as the Taliban approached Kabul.

In a video posted on his Facebook page, Ghani also confirmed that he was in the United Arab Emirates, which said it had accepted him on "humanitarian grounds".

He said he was "in discussions" over a return to the country and supported the new dialogue between the Taliban and officials from the last government.
