As part of truce negotiations with Israel, the Palestinian militant group Hamas announced Wednesday that it has agreed to free ten hostages it is holding in Gaza, according to AFP.

Despite the "difficulty of negotiations," the group stated that it was making efforts to overcome obstacles.
The group was alluding to the influx of aid into Gaza, the Israeli military's pullout from the Palestinian region under blockade, and assurances of a lasting peace.

When Hamas invaded southern Israel and killed 1,200 people while taking hostages, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. Since then, Israel has killed over 57,000 people in Gaza through unparalleled air and ground attacks.
UN officials claim that the population is on the brink of starvation as a result of Tel Aviv's strict ban on humanitarian aid.

Due to significant differences between Israel and Hamas, attempts to extend a temporary ceasefire that went into effect in January had stagnated.

Israel calls on the militant organization to free all of the hostages that are still held and for Hamas to disarm itself and cease to exist as a military and political force in Gaza. Israel must agree to halt the war and remove its forces, according to Hamas.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on July 2 that Israel has accepted the "necessary conditions" to complete a truce with Hamas that would last for 60 days.
Trump declared that "we will work with all parties to end the war" during this time.
As an ally of Israel and a guarantor of its security, Washington serves as a mediator in the negotiations.
