NEW DELHI: A recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, has been hailed as a turning point in India-China relations. Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC), emphasized that the discussions signaled a "new beginning" for bilateral ties.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit on October 24, was the first interaction between the two leaders in five years. It was after the agreement to end the prolonged military standoff in Eastern Ladakh, leaving relations between the two nations strained for over four years.

Official Chinese media reported that Liu expressed optimism about the renewed engagement during his discussions with Indian Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat on Tuesday. He said the rejuvenation of India-China relations serves the core interests of their combined 2.8 billion people, aligns with the aspirations of the Global South, and adheres to the "correct direction of history."

The two leaders agreed on measures for patrolling and disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. They directed Special Representatives for the boundary mechanism to meet and discuss further steps.

In their post-meet talks, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brazil. That was followed by a meeting of the WMCC, which works toward strengthening stability along the LAC.

China has promised to increase the political and people-to-people relationships with India and stated that it is willing to further the friendly and cooperative relations.
