Indonesia Plane Crash: Authorities Locate Black Boxes of Sriwijaya Air Jet

Indonesia: A passenger aeroplane has gone missing in Indonesia on January 9.

Flightradar24 tweeted saying, "Sriwijaya Air flight #SJ182 lost more than 10.000 feet of altitude in less than one minute, about 4 minutes after departure from Jakarta."

They added that the flight was operated by a Boeing 737-500 "classic" with registration number PK-CLC (MSN 27323).

Flightradar24 said the plane took off at 07:36 UTC time and the ADS-B signal was lost minutes later, at 07:40:27.

The flight was en route from Jakarta to Pontianak West Kalimantan in Indonesia.

On Sunday, the Indonesian authorities said that they could locate black boxes of the Sriwijaya Air jet, which crashed on Saturday. Human body parts along with other suspected pieces of the plane were retrieved.

After the 2018 plane crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max, where 189 passengers and crew were killed, this was the first major crash since then. The Lion Air Boeing 737 Max plunged into the Java Sea after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

According to the database of Aviation Safety Network, over the past decade, more number of people had died in air crashes in Indonesia as compared to any other country.

The Chief of Indonesia National Transport Safety Committee, Soerjanto Tjahjono said that the locations two black boxes of Flight SJ 182 have been identified.

The military chief, Hadi Tjahjanto said that "hopefully" they will retrieve them soon.

The rescuers brought the pieces of wreckage to the Jakarta port. The pieces of wreckage came from a depth of 23 meters near a group of islands off the Jakarta coast, said the authority.

The authorities further said that they retrieved body parts and clothing too. The Indonesian police has asked the family members of the people who were on board the flight to provide information like the dental records and DNA samples to help identify bodies. 12 crew members, along with 50 passengers were on board.
