Iran threatens to take fifth step to reduce on nuke commitments

Tehran: A senior Iranian official has warned that the country would take the fifth step of scaling back its commitments under a landmark nuclear deal it clinched with major world powers in 2015 if the European signatories did not take practical measures to salvage it. “Tehran has started different steps to reduce its peaceful nuclear commitments in order to maintain and balance its commitments under the JCPOA and if the Europeans fail to fulfill their obligations, we will take the fifth step,” Press TV quoted Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani as saying on Sunday.

US President Donald Trump, a stern critic of the historic deal, unilaterally pulled Washington out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in May 2018 and unleashed the “toughest ever” sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Tehran has so far rowed back on its nuclear commitments four times in compliance with Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA. (IANS)
