KATHMANDU: A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in the early hours of Saturday, the National Centre of Seismology (NCS) informed. The quake hit the Himalayan nation at 3:59 am IST with its epicenter pinpointed at Latitude 29.17 N and Longitude 81.59 E.
Occurring at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers, the quake sent shocks among the residents.
No significant damage or loss of life has been reported, but the authorities are on high alert as they continue to monitor the affected areas. The emergency teams are put on standby, waiting for further updates as the full impact of the quake begins to unravel.
This latest earthquake comes barely a month after Nepal witnessed a destructive 6.4-magnitude earthquake that took the lives of 157 people and injured several others besides destroying properties.
The earlier quake caused destruction at every corner of the country, leaving many injured and displacing thousands of families. To make things worse, aftershocks, including a 3.3-magnitude tremor were felt later, made things even more challenging for the affected communities.
Earthquakes are not rare in Nepal, as it is located in a seismically active zone along the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The region has experienced some devastating earthquakes in the past, which always raises public anxiety whenever tremors occur.
