Trump's "decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership" was credited by Pakistan with easing a recent armed conflict between India and Pakistan that resulted in a truce following days of heavy cross-border shelling.

After 26 people were killed in a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the war started. On May 7, India launched "Operation Sindoor" in retaliation, shooting targeting terrorist camps in regions controlled by Pakistan. As a result, there was heavy gunfire for four days, which ended on May 10 when the military leaders of both nations agreed to halt hostilities. India has maintained that its forceful military operations compelled Pakistan to request an end to the fighting.

The nomination was made public by the government of Pakistan on X, in the following words: "Government of Pakistan Recommends President Donald J. Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Government of Pakistan has resolved to formally nominate President Donald J. Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, in appreciation of his decisive diplomatic intervention and key leadership throughout the recent India-Pakistan crisis."

This comes just after the military crisis, on Wednesday, President Trump hosted Pakistan's Army Chief, Asim Munir, at the White House in a rare visit. Although the specifics of their conversation have not been made public, Munir and Trump reportedly had lunch together, according to Geo News.

Recently appointed as the first "Field Marshal" since Ayub Khan in 1959, Munir had already demanded that Trump be nominated for the Nobel Prize. He credited the US president with preventing a potential nuclear conflict between the two South Asian nations.

White House press secretary Anna Kelly also affirmed prior to the meeting that "Trump would receive Munir after he called for the president to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for averting a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan."

Pakistani officials are calling Munir's invitation to the White House a "serious diplomatic achievement," underlining its alleged importance in their foreign policy, according to Dawn.
