SOUTH KOREA: The impeached President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, has been detained on charges of insurrection following his failed attempt to impose martial law. He is the first sitting president in the country's history to be detained. This event is unprecedented and shows how much political turmoil South Korea is currently facing. Yoon's arrest follows a failed attempt earlier this month, which highlights the seriousness of the case as he faces serious allegations linked to his declaration of martial law last month.
Early Wednesday morning, more than 1,000 anti-corruption investigators and police officers arrived at Yoon's residence, ready for resistance. After three blockades were set up to block their entry, law enforcement made their way through the barriers after hours of strategic planning, allowing them to execute the arrest warrant without further incident.
Yoon's troubles began with his declaration of martial law on December 3, a move that incensed widespread outrage and was quickly overturned by parliament. This led the opposition parties into initiating an impeachment motion against him, which later ensued after failing its first attempt.
The Constitutional Court of South Korea is now sitting on the decision whether to reinstate Yoon on full presidential powers or permanently impeach him. Meanwhile, Yoon faces serious crimes of insurrection since an arrest warrant was issued against him in late December and his case remains pending. The nation watches this unprecedented development closely since the country reflects deep political divisions.
