A Form of Self-expression

Rightly or wrongly, people make a shrewd assessment of our character, based on the way we dress. But getting dressed is not only about showcasing ourselves to the public, it also works as a way to potentially alter the way we feel about ourselves at a particular moment.

Fashion is very intuitive. For everyone style and fashion can be different. What I may call fashion, may look like fashion faux pas and vice versa. But in my opinion, fashion can be seen as a form of self-expression as fashion is a way of outwardly communicating the unexplainable inner creations of our minds and souls. Once Marc Jacobs also said that "There are hints about who you are in what you wear." When you wear something that is comfortable, cute or fancy, it makes you feel good about yourself. It's self-knowledge and self-confidence expressed through what you choose to wear. Fashion is in the clothes, but style is in the person.

Rightly or wrongly, people make a shrewd assessment of our character, based on the way we dress. But getting dressed is not only about showcasing ourselves to the public, it also works as a way to potentially alter the way we feel about ourselves at a particular moment.

The clothes that we wearalso have a particular purpose. They keep us warm and comfortable. Fashion stands for liberalism, individualism and open culture. Some also dismiss fashion as superficial, and it suggests that those with this attitude have never given serious thought to the history and symbolism of the wardrobe.

It is no coincidence that there is a strict and unitary dress code in places such as prisons, in cults, and in countries ruled by a regime of terror.

For instance, the women's rights movement of the 1970's went along with swimwear becoming scarcer, high heels becoming higher; burning brassieres was a symbol of breaking free from the shackles of oppression. Fashion also symbolises how freely the individual is allowed to express themselves in a society.

Naima Joseph who is a freshman at Garfield, would describe their style as falling into "Emo and Lolita subcultures of alternative fashion." Currently, Joseph's favourite trends are petticoats. He adds that they can accentuate an outfit. Alternatively, Joseph does not have a particular fashion trend that they like the least, however, they are not a fan of shoulder pads and tucking pants into shoes. Joseph gets most of their style inspiration from Melanie Martinez and their friend Andrew, whose style can be described as "trad goth".

Nadia Caty's favourite fashion trends would be described as street wear and formal, including button-downs, leather jackets, sweats and slacks, with some of her favorite brands being Puma,Nike, Jordan and Dr. Martens. Caty's least favourite trends are skinny jeans, bootcut pantsand people who cannot balance out an outfit by wearing a fitted shirt with baggy pants or a complete fitted outfit".

Saiyam Allen, a junior, is a 17-year-old "trendsetter".

She describes her style as original, edgy, and trendy.Allen's current favourite trend is oversized and baggy clothing. Her least favourite trend is bell-bottom jeans. So therefore, everyone has a different opinion regarding fashion. As, fashion penetrates into all social spheres and its own way impresses every person.

According to Cambridge dictionary, fashion is a popular style. In this case it is a popular style of clothing. Quoting the famous fashion designer Coco Chanel, 'Fashion is not something that exists in clothes alone; fashion is something in the air. It's the wind that blows in the new direction, you feel it coming, you smell it. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.'

Billie Eilish PirateBaird O'Connell is an American singer and a songwriter. Her fashion sense is unique and different from the other famous women artists. She reversed the conventional definition of beauty to something fantastical that is influenced by cyber culture. She wears baggy and oversized clothes- the skater and hip-hop styles.

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, known professionally as Lady Gaga, is an American singer, songwriter, and an actress. Therefore, from the bold red-carpet moments of her Born This Way days to the fashion forward and chic styling of her more recent Star, Lady Gaga has been serving us iconic looks from day one.

However, fashion Impacts our mood, emotion and self-confidence. Fashion is also a great mood booster, so make sure you fill your wardrobe with clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable. For instance, bright and cheery outfits have been proven to improve the wearer's mood, and likewise, baggy clothes in muted colours may provide you with the comfort that you need. Therefore, fashion not only enhances your appearance but also helps you feel good. (The writer, Uzma Zebrin Haque, is a PG 1st Sem student of Cotton University)
