Shab-e-Barat is one of the major Muslim festivals observed on the 15th night of the Shaban month which is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar.

This year the auspicious time of Shab-e-Barat starts from Friday 18th March and ends on the night of Saturday 19 March.

The festival is known with different names in various regions that include Barat Night, Berat Kandili, Nisfu Syaaban Shab-e-Barat and Cheragh e Barat.

Shab-e-Barat is celebrated by the Muslim community across South Asia including countries such as India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Central Asia and Turkey.

The meaning of Shab-e-Barat is the night of forgiveness and fortune on which Allah showers blessings upon those performing prayers.

The night is also meant to pray to the Almighty asking forgiveness for sins committed by you and your ancestors as it is believed Allah forgives everyone on Shab-e-Barat.

Though it is widely known among the countries of South Asia the celebration of this Islamic festival is not observed by the Wahhabis, Salafis, and orthodox Arabs.
