Vaastu Tips for the Southeast

There should not be anything related to water in the Southeast as it will have a conflict with the fire element. Tubewell, ponds, deep tubewell, septic tank, wash basins, underground or overhead water tanks are forbidden at the Southeast. The bedroom of a married couple should not be at the Southeast. It will always create disharmony between them. 

The Southeast is ruled by the fire element. Lord Shukra is the ruling planet of this direction. Since this direction receives the maximum sunrays, it is hotter than all the other directions. Vaastu recommends placement of the kitchen, electrical items, boilers, transformers, generator sets etc in this direction.

The Southeast direction also has a profound effect on the health of the ladies. Defects at the Southeast have a negative bearing on the health of the female members of a household. Since the ladies are invariably involved in cooking, the kitchen must be at the Southeast for their all round good/benefit. The dressing room or the powder room should be at the Southeast too because Shukra or Venus is associated with beauty.

Some Cardinal Donts

The Pitru Paksh (an austere fortnight related to ancestors)

Pitru Paksha is a 16–lunar day period in the Hindu calendar when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors (Pitrs), particularly through food offerings and rites. Currently Pitru Paksh is going on (from 10th of September) and will end on the 25th of September.

Some Don'ts of this solemn period:

1. Avoid non-vegetarian food including onion and garlic.

2. Those observing Pitru Paksh should not shave or cut nails.

3. Wear clean clothes while performing shraddha.

4. Avoid leather items like shoes, belts or even wallets.

5. Do not use black urad dal, kala jeera, kala namak or gram dal or masur dal in any food prepared during the period of shraddha.

6. DO NOT chase away beggars or animals like dogs, cats or crow who come looking for food. Rather offer them food. It is believed that the spirit of ancestors may come in any form during the period of Pitru Paksh to receive offerings.

About keeping certain things under the pillow for luck

There are many things which can reduce negative effects and bring about positivity. Our ancient pundits have observed these things/phenomena and listed them in our scriptures. Some of these have also been inducted in astrology as remedial measures. We cannot find any scientific explanation for many of these practices (for ushering positivity). However practical observations (after incorporating these methods) can significantly authenticate the claims. Most of these practices/methods do not have any negative effects and are therefore safe.

Turmeric: - According to astro-vaastu, the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati/Guru) is responsible for luck, name and fame, wealth, marital bliss, growth and development. If the position of Guru is strong in your horoscope, then lady luck will always be with you. The yellow colour is associated with Brihaspati or Guru. If one is facing any problems related to growth and development, he/she should wrap yellow turmeric pieces in a yellow cloth and keep them under the pillow. This holds well for business-persons as well as those in service.

Silver Fish

The Venus or Shukra is responsible for love, beauty, happiness, wealth etc. It is extremely beneficial to wear silver items to strengthen this planet. To nullify bad effects of Shukra or any defect at the Southeast, keep a fish made of silver in a silver bowl with water under the bed.

Iron Ring

The Iron ring is recommended to ward off the evil effects of Shani or Saturn. It is worn on the middle finger of the right hand. It can also be kept under the pillow while sleeping. Water can be kept in an iron vessel and kept under the bed overnight. This water should be drunk in the morning to make the Saturn stronger.

Ideally the iron ring should be prepared from a horseshoe or boat's keel.

Garlic

Garlic is considered as a symbol of luck in astrology. Garlic pods can be kept under the pillow for a good night's sleep. It also removes negative energy and brings positive energy.

Do not worry about the smell!

The Matsya yantra

It is said that Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of a huge fish to save the earth .The Matsya yantra is associated with Lord Vishnu. The movement of fish clears the water in a pond. The Matsya yantra has similar properties for clearing vaastu defects. This yantra is ideal for the workplace and house for ushering in prosperity and wealth. Keep the yantra in the Northeast corner of the house or office.

Remedies

I wish to purchase a North facing plot which has an extension at the Southwest. This extension is a small area of about 10 feet by 15 feet. It is a land locked spot. I have to pay for this portion whether I own it or not. What can be done?

You should cut off the extended portion with pyramids or a copper wire. Install a Rahu Yantra at the Southwest.

You may continue to enjoy that area by making a small storeroom or any utility room. You can have the overhead water tank there too. However, if you do not want to do this, then plant big trees (in that portion) instead and raise it a little through earth filling. You can even make that area a dump yard .

I have a godown where hardware items are kept. There are several staffs including a few ladies in the account section. There is a need for a separate toilet for the ladies. Since my entire godown area is occupied, I can find space only at the Southwest and Northeast. Where should I build it?
