NEW DELHI: A 4.0 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Delhi early on Monday (February 17, 2025), according to the National Center for Seismology. The tremors were felt in many areas of the city and the nearby National Capital Region. The earthquake’s center was in New Delhi, with a depth of five kilometers, the agency said on X. Though the earthquake was mild, the shallow depth made the tremors easier to feel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged residents in the affected region to remain calm, follow safety measures, and stay alert for potential aftershocks. In a post on X, he said, "Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation."
The epicentre of the earthquake was identified as the Jheel Park area in Dhaula Kuan. Some residents reported hearing a loud sound as the ground trembled. According to an official, the Jheel Park region experiences small, low-magnitude earthquakes approximately every two to three years. The earthquake's strong tremors caused panic among residents of high-rise buildings in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, prompting many to rush outside for safety.
The Delhi Police also shared a message on X, stating, "We hope you all are safe, Delhi!" and urged citizens to contact the emergency helpline at 112 if needed.
