85-Year-Old Man walked out of a Nagpur Hospital for 40-Year-Old Patient, Dies at Home

Mumbai: An 85-year-old man Narayan Dabhalkar walked out of a Nagpur hospital for a young patient, aged 40, on Tuesday to save the patient's life. He died at his home three days later.

He was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) member, who was admitted to Indira Gandhi government hospital in Nagpur after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Instead of dipping oxygen levels, Dabhalkar went against the medical advice of his doctors and opted for a discharge after he saw a woman requesting to get her husband admitted to the hospital. He told the doctors that he's 85 and he had his life. Now, saving the life of a young man is more important, according to him.

"Their children are young...please give my bed to them," Dabhalkar added.

However, the doctors said that his condition was not stable and treatment at the hospital was necessary. But the old man called his daughter and informed her about the situation. He died three days after he was brought home.

A post on social media on Monday said that Narayan Dabhalkar had sacrificed a bed for a young patient.

Dabhalkar's daughter said that she and her family rushed him to the hospital when his oxygen levels dipped on April 22. They got a bed after great effort but he was back home in a couple of hours.

"My father said he would prefer to spend his last moments with us. He also told us about a young patient," Dabhalkar's daughter added.

The report stated that even if a patient voluntarily leaves, a bed is not assigned to a specific person on request.

The official also stated that who to give the bed is the prerogative of the doctor. Although Dabhalkar sacrificed his own life for the sake of a young patient, the doctors, and the workers should have taken note of the situation.

Maharashtra still continues to be the worst COVID-19 affected state in the nation reporting over 66,000 fresh cases of coronavirus on Tuesday and 895 COVID-induced fatalities, the highest spike in the number of deaths witnessed by the state so far.

India has reported 3,60,960 fresh cases on Tuesday, the highest ever single-day spike recorded globally. In the last 24 hours, 3,293 fresh cases of COVID-induced fatalities were reported taking the total death toll of the country to 2.01 lakhs. Yesterday's surge in the cases of the novel coronavirus takes the total tally of the country's caseload to 1.79 crores while the active cases amount to 29.71 lakhs.
