A couple from Odisha was seen in a viral clip tied together like oxen and ploughing a field, a punishment for marrying outside their caste
Outrage has been sparked by the distressing video that was captured and is currently being extensively circulated on social media.
The young couple, who hail from the Rayagada district's Kanjamajhira hamlet, recently fell in love and were married. However, because the man is the son of the woman's paternal aunt, some villagers disagreed with their choice. The local customs view such a marriage as taboo.
A mob bound the pair to a wooden yoke and forced them to drag it across a field as a form of punishment. In the footage, two men are seen using sticks to attack the woman and another male.
In order to 'clear' their perceived fault, the couple was forced to undergo purification rites at the community shrine after being publicly humiliated.
S Swati Kumar, the superintendent of police, announced on Friday that a team had come to the village to conduct an inquiry and that a case will be filed shortly.
A similar occurrence had occurred in January after a woman married into a different caste, thereby forcing 40 members of a Rayagada district family to shave their heads as part of a "purification" ceremony.
