NEW DELHI: AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal suffered a severe blow in his stronghold, New Delhi, when BJP candidate Parvesh Verma defeated him by 3,182 votes. It is a serious blow to Kejriwal, who has been a significant force in Delhi politics for the last ten years.
The situation turned for AAP as former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia too lost in the Jangpura constituency. Ultimately, trailing by 572 votes after nine rounds of counting, Sisodia too accepted the results graciously.
He hoped that the newly elected BJP representative would focus on the betterment and welfare of the people of Jangpura. "I congratulate the winning candidate and hope they will focus on the progress and welfare of the people of Jangpura," he said.
This election marked a major return for the BJP, which hasn't been in power in Delhi since 1998. The Congress party, that was in the capital since 1998 until 2013 received another heavy jolt when it suffered third successive defeat for the party in the region.
The February 5 elections have witnessed a 60.54% voter turnout among the 1.55 crore eligible voters in Delhi. With AAP losing its grip and BJP gaining major ground, the political dynamics in the national capital appear to be undergoing a substantial transformation.
