NEW DELHI: As the number of flu cases increases drastically in the dry season, the number of Covid cases have also seen an increase. The number of active cases in the country has crossed the 5000 mark for the first time in 109 days according to a report published on Friday. The number of single-day detections has also managed to reach 796 according to the data published by the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare.

According to the statement, a total of 98727 tests were conducted across the country on Thursday. The country now has an active caseload of 5026 Covid cases. The country has seen a total number of 530795 deaths due to covid till Friday while 220.64 cr doses of Covid vaccines have been administered across the country.

The states of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharastra have seen the highest number of cases in the last few days. The Union Health Secretary has written to the heads of these states to take necessary action.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan asked the mentioned states to take up proactive testing for Covid and to monitor new and possible clusters of a virus outbreak. He also ordered to keep an eye on all influenza-like illnesses and send samples of all international travellers for genome sequencing. He also told the states to take up promotions for the precautionary dose and ensure adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour.

The letter also mentioned about a sub-variant of the XBB variant which was reported from both Maharastra and Gujarat. The recombinant variant XBB is said to be a combination of two Omicron sub-variants namely BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75.

The detention of a new Covid variant in two travellers at the Ben-Gurion International Airport in Isreal has triggered fears of another outbreak in the country.
