Actor Nafisa Ali and Tennis Champion Leander Paes Joins Trinamool Congress Party
NEW DELHI: On Friday, 29 October Actor Nafisa Ali and Tennis Champion Leander Paes officially joined the Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) in Goa in the presence of Mamata Benerjee, chief of the party.
TMC has been trying to make inroads in the Goa assembly polls 2022. The party with its efforts in becoming a powerful contender against the BJP in the state has decided numerous engagements in Goa for Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee came to Goa on Thursday, 28 October, and on her 3-day visit, she welcomed tennis champion Paes and actor Nafisa into the TMC party. The motive behind her tour seems like an attempt of calculating political strategies before the polls in the BJP ruled coastal state.
Nafisa Ali, 64, is an actor, a model, and an activist born in Kolkata. She worked in the film industry for many years including Hindi and Malayalam movies. She was a champion in National Swimming from the year 1972 to 1974 and she won the title of Femina Miss India in the year 1976 representing India at the Miss International contest and became the 2nd runner-up. Her contribution to Bollywood includes movies like Major Saab acting with Amitabh Bachchan, Junoon with Shashi Kapoor, Bewafaa in 2005, Yamla Pagla Deewana in 2010, and many others. In the 2004 Lok Sabha election from South Kolkata, she contested against Mamata Banerjee.
Leander Paes, 48, is a former tennis player from India who is known as the greatest player of tennis in doubles. He had made records in most of the doubles wins of tennis. Paes for his contribution to tennis won many Awards like the Padma Bhushan in the year 2014, Arjuna Award in 1990. He was honoured with India's highest sporting honour the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 1996-97. He is also the sports ambassador of the state of Haryana at present.
A press conference is scheduled to be held on 30 October by Benerjee after her visit to Basilica of Bom Jesus at Old Goa and Bodgeshwar Temple at Mapusa. As she came with the political purpose to the state she will be interacting with vendors of flowers and vegetables at Mapusa market.
The TMC after its great success in the state of West Bengal during the 2020 Assembly Election now has been trying to make its impression in the national level and already made inroads in the BJP ruling states of Tripura and Goa.
