JORHAT, February 3: With the State gearing up for the 2016 Assembly elections and amidst accusations of various political parties resorting to different techniques to woo voters by distributing items like blankets, textile yarn and wine, activists of the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Jorhat district committee raided a warehouse belonging to the PWD Building at Garmur in Jorhat on Wednesday and seized 8,910 pieces of blankets wrapped in 297 barrels of 30 each.

Incidentally, the blankets were being unloaded from a truck bearing registration number HR-38 S 1711 and sources have informed about the consignment to have been brought from Ludhia in Punjab and was a part of the Chief Minister’s Special Scheme. Notably the custodian of the lot was the Handloom & Textile department of the Government of Assam. Police later arrived and took the lot of the blankets under their control and took measures to shift the materials to a safer location. Deputy Commissioner Solanki Vishal Vasant, however, expressed ignorance about receiving any official order copy of the Supreme Court directive but confirmed hearing about it verbally.

A standing Supreme Court directive is in force prohibiting distribution of textile yarn and blankets and restraining the government from implementing such schemes until further orders. Taking a tough stand against the Chief Minister’s Rs 500-crore welfare schemes, a bench of the apex court headed by the Chief Justice while making several scathing observations had termed the distribution as ‘electoral gimmicks to suit vested interests’.
