Bongaigaon, June 7: Demanding separate Kamatapur state and ST categorization of Koch-Rajbongshi community, activists of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (Biswajit Ray faction) staged a three-hour long demonstration in the Dighalipukhuri area in Guwahati.

Gokul Barman, secretary of AKRSU, said that already the Government of India had formed separate Telenga, Chattisgarh, Uttarakkhand and Jharkhand states. “But the Government of India has showed little interest in forming separate Kamatapur state. History says that according to India-Kamatapur accord of 1949, separate Kamatapur had to be formed. But yet it has not been done. In the same way, Koch- Rajbongshis have been demanding ST status since 1968. In the year 1996, during the Hiteswar Saikia government in Assam, Koch- Rajbongshis were given ST status through ordince. But this time also we were deprived as the next government has not produced the Bill in the Parliament. Like the previous UPA government, the present BJP government also used our sentiments for political benefit in the last parliamentary election. On February 29, a seven-member committee was formed in New Delhi to filize the matter and the committee had been given time deadline till May 31. But this committee has not submitted the report as yet. So we want our demands to be fulfilled immediately or we will launch a massive democratic agitation in the coming days,” he said.

AKRSU submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India through the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup in this regard.
