
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared on Thursday that all northeastern states will be connected to Delhi via rail and air by 2027. This commitment was made during the 'Unity Utsav - One Voice, One Nation' event organized by the Assam Rifles in New Delhi, where Shah served as the chief guest.
In his speech, Shah highlighted the importance of unity for the northeastern region, which he said has always been isolated from the national capital. He attributed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for improving connectivity and creating a sense of belonging between the Northeast and the rest of India. "Today, Northeast India is an integral part of the nation," he stated.
Shah highlighted the Modi government's increased budgetary allocations for the region, asserting that these provisions have grown three to four times. He pointed out the vast potential for youth in various sectors, including economics, culture, sports, and technology.
The Home Minister also hailed the rich cultural diversity of the Northeast, referring to more than 220 ethnic groups, 200 dialects, and many festivals and cuisines. He reaffirmed that the heritage of the region is a national asset.
At the five-day Unity Utsav, which was an exhibition of cultural prowess of the Northeast, 212 teams and 1,500 students engaged in sports competitions, and most of the awards went to Manipur. Plans for India's first sports university in Manipur were announced by Shah, evidencing the interest of the region in developing sports.
Shah concluded by mentioning major improvements in law and order in the Northeast, with a 70% decline in violent incidents and an appeal to youth engaged in violence to adopt peace and development.
