MUMBAI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday appealed to industrialists not to engage illegal Bangladeshi migrants as cheap labor in their factories. Addressing a press conference after meeting top industrial leaders from major corporate groups, including Tata, Adani, and Mahindra, Sarma emphasized that the root cause of illegal migration needs to be addressed and asked industries to stop employing such workers.

He noted that middlemen usually arrange for the illegal recruitment of inexpensive labor from Bangladesh and requested a collective decision among the industrialists to restrain from doing so. In response to a question whether the issue was ever raised during his interactions with the industry leaders Sarma referred to the fact that Assam has been dealing with this issue since 1979 and thus did not require further emphasis.

In addition to the state's investment plans, Sarma revealed that the Centre and its allies would commit a whopping Rs 1 lakh crore at the forthcoming "Advantage Assam 2.0" summit scheduled for February, which would attract investments in sectors like tourism, semiconductors, and defense.

Sarma also updated on Tata's Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor assembling unit, the operations of which will start towards late 2025. The government is formulating policies for conversion of unused land in tea estates into solar power capacities and is also giving attention to defence production due to its location near strategic military deployment areas.
