College girl and friends carried out thefts over 6 months for holidays, parties and fashion
Bengaluru: In a shocking case of family betrayal and youthful excess, a 19-year-old girl and her college friends were arrested in Bengaluru for systematically stealing gold ornaments worth ₹1 crore from her paternal uncle’s house over a six-month period.
The girl, who lived opposite her uncle’s home in Byrarthu village, used her easy access to plan and execute the thefts during casual visits, enlisting her friends to help pawn or sell the stolen jewellery.
Investigation Uncovers Shocking Motive
The case came to light when Srinivas finally filed a complaint on 9 June. Although he noticed some jewellery missing as early as January, he hesitated to approach police to avoid damaging his family’s reputation. It wasn’t until more ornaments vanished after a family event in late May that he decided to act.
During their investigation, police scrutinised regular visitors and soon zeroed in on the niece. She was summoned on 27 June and, under questioning, confessed to the crime. The motive? Funding vacations, parties, and a high-end lifestyle.
She admitted passing the stolen ornaments to one friend, who then involved two more acquaintances to pawn or sell them in jewellery shops, particularly in Chickpete. Some of the stolen gold and cash were recovered, while efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining valuables.
This case has not only shocked the local community but also raised concerns over growing youth indulgence and the extent to which some may go in pursuit of luxury and social status
