Guwahati – In a heartening shift from traditional classroom roles, teachers across Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in Assam have taken on the role of mentors, helping students overcome emotional and psychological challenges through a unique programme called ‘Each One Reach One’.
Launched a year ago under the inspiration of the National Education Policy 2020, the initiative has already supported over 2,000 students across the state. Children like Keya, Shristi, and Mofida, who once battled hyperactivity, social anxiety, and crippling self-doubt, are now finding confidence and calm through one-on-one mentoring from their own teachers.
“Teachers always give their best in the classroom. But not all students can keep pace. Some struggle silently with academic stress, behavioural issues, and even family problems,” said Chandrashekhar Azad, Deputy Commissioner of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Guwahati Region.
Azad explained that the idea was born during an interaction with board exam students last year. He asked them to anonymously write down their biggest fears. The responses were raw and eye-opening — many were overwhelmed not just by academic pressure, but by deeper anxieties about their future, peer expectations, and problems at home.
The programme matches each student in need with a teacher-mentor, who provides personalised support both academically and emotionally. The impact has been so powerful that KVs in other parts of India are now looking to replicate the model, Azad noted.
“This initiative is about listening, understanding, and guiding – not just teaching,” Azad said. “And that’s what real education is all about.”
With growing attention from across the country, 'Each One Reach One' may soon become a nationwide model for mental wellness and mentoring in schools.
