NEW DELHI: When a lady claiming to be the groom's sweetheart arrived at their wedding location in Mohali, the bride called off her marriage and much drama ensued.
The Patiala-born woman, a mother of two, accused the groom of infidelity and asserted that he had made a marriage commitment to her.
It was all a comedy of errors as a married woman with two kids accused the would- be groom of 'infidelity', when she herself was married to a man with whom she had two children, as she hadn't divorced him and was instead planning to tie the knot with the would- be 'groom'.
They had lived together for the previous eight years, she added.
She notified the authorities, who transported the Sirhind resident groom to the Mataur police station.
"I've been living with him (the groom) for a while and have already filed for divorce from my earlier husband.
His relationship with my kids was friendly. He didn't share his wedding preparations with me, though," the woman remarked.
The groom, meanwhile, disclosed that his lover allegedly concealed the fact that she was not divorced from her earlier husband, with whom she had two kids.
"I was unaware that she hadn't yet filed for divorce from her husband.
I decided to get married to someone else since she lied to me," he told the police.
The bride's family urged the groom to pay for the preparations after the wedding was postponed.
"We are still looking into the matter. After a thorough investigation, we will take appropriate action against the guilty, said Naveen Pal, the Mataur station house officer.
In another strange incident, a woman in Uttarakhand's Haldwani called off her wedding because she did not like the lehenga that her in-laws had given her, according to police.
Days before the wedding, the couple split up because the groom's father had ordered a lehenga from Lucknow for Rs 10,000.
It was given to the bride-to-be by the father of the groom, but the bride claimed she did not like it.
The situation worsened as a result, and the woman subsequently refused to marry her Almora-born fiance.
The couple was engaged in June of this year, and the groom's family had already ordered invitation cards for the wedding on November 5.
Both rural and urban areas of India are experiencing divorce right now. To leave a dysfunctional marriage, though, takes both husbands and wives a long time.
