NEW DELHI: Delhi police have arrested two men over the alleged rape of a British woman at a Mahipalpur hotel. One of the suspects, 24-year-old Kailash, had met the woman online before allegedly assaulting her.
The second suspect, a 27-year-old hotel housekeeper, has been accused of molesting the victim as she tried to seek help.
The assault happened on the night of March 11. The British woman, who had recently arrived in India a month earlier, had previously spent time in Goa and Maharashtra before arriving in Delhi to visit Kailash.
The two had just gotten to know each other through Instagram and had met to meet after agreeing. She had booked a room in a hotel at Mahipalpur, where they had both had drinks before he raped her and disappeared.
When the woman tried to raise an alarm among hotel employees, the housekeeper reportedly touched her inappropriately inside the hotel elevator. She went to a hospital on March 12 after the assault, where the police were informed of the offense.
A case was registered under Sections 64 (rape), 75 (sexual harassment), 127(2) (wrongful confinement), and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Vasant Kunj North Police Station.
The police authorities acted with lightning speed and within hours of filing the complaint, had arrested both suspects. "It was a relatively easier task to track the suspect since he had presented his identity documents upon check-in at the hotel," asserted one of the police authorities. The suspects were later produced before a court of law and put into judicial custody.
Investigations revealed that Kailash, a resident of East Delhi, had been communicating with the victim for over a month and used a translation app to overcome language barriers. Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the hotel to verify the sequence of events.
Additionally, a special investigative team, led by an ACP under the supervision of the DCP, seized the accused's mobile phone to determine whether he had contacted other women on social media.
The incident was also reported to the British High Commission by the police with a pledge to seriously investigate the case.
