Centre Proposes New Rule To Make 6 Airbags Mandatory For All Vehicles In India

New Delhi: The Central Government has issued a draft notice which proposes a new car airbag rule being followed from this year itself and the process for implementing this initiative has been started by the Government of India.

According to this rule, all the newly manufactured cars that will be sold in India must include six airbags for the safety of the individuals.

The government issued a draft statement on 14 January seeking the opinions and remarks of the public and other stakeholders on the suggested directive that will make it mandatory for car manufacturers to embed six airbags starting from 1 October onwards.

The government will meticulously examine the feedbacks received over the next month and come up with a conclusive report, with changes, if required. The final report will be issued to enforce the regulation.

Earlier, the Union Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari made a request to car manufacturers on 3 August 2021 to provide at least 6 airbags for all vehicles and the raw draft notification of the new car airbag rule is a follow-up of it.

Currently, only two airbags are compulsory for all vehicles sold in India. One airbag is attached to the drivers seat while the other one is attached in the front seat of the vehicle.

Nitin Gadkari expressed the message in a string of tweets via his official Twitter handle.
