In a marital conflict case, a lady petitioned for a considerable amount of alimony—a property in Mumbai and Rs 12 crore in maintenance—which led Chief Justice of India BR Gavai to observe that the woman is well qualified and has to earn a living.
The woman said she wanted a mansion in Mumbai, a high-end BMW automobile, and Rs 12 crore for maintenance when the Chief Justice inquired what she wanted.

"But that house is in Kalpataru... one of the good builders. You are an IT person. You have done your MBA. You are in demand in Bengaluru, Hyderabad... Why don't you work?" the Chief Justice replied. "You had a marriage for just 18 months. And you also want a BMW?" he added, noting that the woman was practically asking for an alimony of Rs 1 crore for every month of her 18-month marriage.

The petitioner was then reminded by the Chief Justice that she was not entitled to any property owned by the father of her estranged spouse.
When the husband's attorneys pointed out that his income had decreased when he quit his work, the court proceeded to review his tax returns.
The Chief Justice then advised the woman to take a "good job" and "be satisfied" with the apartment.

"Aap itni padi likhi hai. Aapko khudko mangna nahi chahiye aur khudko kama ke khana chahiye (You are so educated, you must not ask and earn your livelihood)," the Chief Justice said. The order in the case has been reserved.
