Delhi Chief Minister announces free traveling for women in buses and metros

New Delhi: In rather good news for the women in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has declared free travel for women passengers in public buses and metros. With this new announcement of the CM, nearly 30 per cent of the 40 lakh commuters traveling in state-run buses are going to be relieved, who are women.

This new announcement by the government is much relieving for women as there are many such women passengers in the capital city who were not able to access transportation facilities through the metro due to the high prices. Kejriwal further adds that the officials are being directed to come up with a detailed plan on implementing the proposal. He said, “We’re making an effort to start this within 2-3 months. We’re also seeking suggestions from people, regarding its implementation.”

Adding to this, Kejriwal’s deputy Manish Sisodia said, “We consider this as an investment in enhancing women security.”

Speaking about the new announcement, Kejriwal also added that their main objective is to encourage women to travel tension-freely who cannot afford to pay for their travel. He said, “This subsidy will not be imposed on anyone. There are women who can afford these modes of transport… they can purchase tickets.”

Although some are of this opinion that this latest move by the Kejriwal government has much to do with the promotion of his party, the Chief Minister denies it immediately. He added, “There is no auspicious time for a good decision,” he rather added that it has been done as part of the government's efforts to reduce the cost of living and improve the quality of life.

While making this announcement, the Chief Minister also recalls how it approached the government at the center requesting not to raise the metro fare but was rejected. he said, “But they didn’t agree. Now, the Delhi government to it on its own…. We don’t need to take approval for this.”
