
NEW DELHI: A man set himself on fire near the Parliament building in New Delhi on Wednesday. He was quickly taken to RML hospital, where he was treated for severe injuries.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident. The area where the man attempted self-immolation (act of setting oneself on fire) has been sealed off, and a forensic team is on-site to determine the substance he used before setting himself on fire.
Delhi police have identified the man as Jitendra, a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh. They believe the suicide attempt may be linked to personal enmity in Bagpat, though the exact cause will only be determined after further investigation.
Delhi Police reported that a man, possibly Jitendra from Uttar Pradesh’s Bagpat, set himself on fire at the roundabout near Rail Bhavan. Local Police, railway police, and some civilians quickly extinguished the flames, and the man was rushed to the hospital. Authorities believe the incident is likely related to personal enmity in Bagpat, and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, earlier last year, a man from Rohini set himself on fire outside the Transport Bhawan near the Parliament in April 2023.
The man was reportedly shouting slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and in support of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He had lost his job during the pandemic lockdown.
He poured an inflammable liquid on himself. Police personnel in the area quickly rescued him and rushed him to a nearby hospital. According to reports, the man suffered 50% burns in the accident.
