DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has instructed schools to identify children of illegal Bangladeshi migrants and ensure they are not provided with birth certificates.
The directive follows a recent order from the Delhi L-G Secretariat to take action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, with the issue becoming a new point of contention between the ruling AAP and the BJP ahead of the Assembly elections.
The civic body has also instructed all MCD zones to clear encroachments made by illegal Bangladeshi migrants. The MCD deputy commissioner has requested an action taken report by December 31.
The deputy commissioner's order stated, "The education department will take appropriate preventive measures to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrants during the admission process in municipal schools. It also requested that proper identification and verification drives be conducted to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrant children in schools."
In response to the directive, AAP MP Sanjay Singh stated that the MCD's order was an attempt to humiliate and disrespect the Purvanchali community under the guise of targeting illegal migrants.
Singh also accused BJP national president JP Nadda of equating Purvanchalis with "Rohingya infiltrators" and "Bangladeshis." Rohingyas are a Muslim minority group from Myanmar.
The Rajya Sabha MP said, "They want to humiliate the poor from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Through this order, they want to threaten Purvanchalis, their kids, and bulldoze their shops and houses in jhuggis."
Purvanchalis, migrants from eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, constitute about 42 percent of Delhi's electorate. The community holds significant influence in nearly half of Delhi's 70 Assembly constituencies, including important areas like Burari, Laxmi Nagar, and Dwarka.
Sanjay Singh also referenced a 2022 post on X by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to accuse the BJP of accommodating Rohingyas in EWS flats in Delhi's Bakkarwala.
Singh said, "The BJP, Hardeep Puri, and Amit Shah know where Bangladeshis and Rohingyas live. They live in Bakkarwala. If you want to act against illegal migrants, go there."
However, Puri has previously pointed out a clarification from the Centre stating that no instructions were issued to provide flats to illegal Rohingya immigrants.
