NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India will declare the dates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls on January 7 at 2 pm through a press conference. The present 70-member Delhi Assembly will finish its term on February 23, and elections have to be conducted before that date. Delhi Assembly polls last took place in 2020, with the polling date falling on February 8, while the counting took place on February 11.
Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal is looking to win for the third time in a row, while Bharatiya Janata Party is looking to take the seat from the ruling party. The Congress party is also trying to position itself as a dark horse.
In the earlier polls of 2015 and 2020, AAP performed at its best with 67 and 62 seats respectively, BJP managed only a few seats and Congress did not even win any. AAP and Congress are fighting in this election too though they were in an alliance together in 2024 Lok Sabha polls under the umbrella of the INDIA bloc.
With the announcement of the final list of 38 candidates for the elections by the AAP, it is the first major party to announce all 70 contenders. For the fourth time, Arvind Kejriwal will contest from the New Delhi constituency, while Chief Minister Atishi will contest for re-election from Kalkaji. The future political scenario of the capital will be determined through the Assembly elections.
