NEW DELHI: Actor turned Comedian Vir Das has been the recipient of widespread backlash after his latest video 'I Come From Two Indias' has gone viral.
An FIR has been filed against the popular stand-up comedian in Delhi's Tilak Marg police station by Aditya Jha, a resident of Delhi.
The complainant has accused Vir Das of making derogatory remarks and sabotaging India's image. Another case has been filed against the comedian with the Mumbai Police by a lawyer named Ashutosh Dubey. The lawyer has demanded that strict action be taken against him.
He was performing at an event at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in the US. He talked about some of the most critical issues facing the country today ranging from the everlasting farmer's protest, the incident of rapes, the war against the coronavirus to the recent crackdowns against comedians like Munawar Faruqui. One could sense in the video that he was subtly firing shots against the Government.
On Tuesday, the comedian took to Twitter to clarify his stand in this matter. He asked people not to misconstrue his statement and fall for edited excerpts from the video. "There has been a sizeable reaction to a video I posted on YouTube. The video is a satire about the duality of two very separate India's that do different things. Like any nation has light and dark, good and evil within it. None of this is a secret," said his statement.
"The video appeals for us to never forget that we are great. To never stop focusing on what makes us great. It ends in a gigantic patriotic round of applause for a country we all love, believe in and are proud of. That there is more to our country than the headlines, a deep beauty. THAT'S the point of the video and the reason for the applause," he further added.
Earlier in the day, actress Kangana Ranaut wasted no time in bashing him for his 'Indian men worship women during the day and gang-rape them at night' comment. She lashed out at him extensively on her Instagram story.
"When you generalize all Indian men as gang-rapists it gives rise and encouragement to racism and bullying against Indians all over the world...after Bengal Famine Churchill famously said, 'These Indians breed like rabbits they are bound to die like this...' he blamed Indians' sex drive/fertility for the death of millions because of hunger... Such creative work targeting an entire race is soft terrorism... strict actions must be taken against such criminals @virdas," wrote Kangana.
